Books used for reception to year 6 tuition

Reception to Year 6 Saturday group lessons

After an initial session to assess a student, we will tailor lesson plans based on ability and the school or result they want to achieve.

The lesson consists of both Maths and English teaching, 55 minutes per subject with a 10 minute break in between. There are two classes for different age groups, one for those aged between 4 and 7 years old (Reception to year 2) and the other for those aged between 7 to 11 (year 3 to year 6).  Each class consists of 4 children per tutor.
Both lessons are broken up into 3 segments.

English lesson

  • The first 15 minutes are spent completing a spelling test.
  • The second segment of the lesson consists of completing an  exam style comprehension activity, a creative writing exercise or verbal reasoning activity.
  • The last 10 minutes of the lesson is spent writing a mini book review on what the pupil has read during that week.

Homework:  The students will be set a spelling list every week, of which they will have to find the meaning of 5 of the spellings. The students will also be encouraged to consistently read a book of their choice.
Mathematics lesson

  • The first 15 minutes will be spent completing a mental maths exercise.
  • The second segment will be spent completing a maths exercise or a non-verbal reasoning activity.
  • The last 10 minutes of the lesson, will be spent either completing word problems or a maths puzzles.

Homework: The students will be set homework according to the topic covered during the lesson.

The lesson will cover various topics in the syllabus, commencing with the students strengths and building on them whilst incorporating their weaknesses. Each topic is introduced with power point presentations along with explanations and exam style practise questions.

Assessment of progress

  • The students will complete an assessment every term, which is when there will also be a parents evening to review your child’s progress.
  • The tutors will complete a weekly report, which will display the activities each pupil has completed during the session and the score they have achieved. The pupil will also have an opportunity to share their opinion on the lesson and the parent/carer can sign and write a comment or a question on this report.
